The popularity of the minivan shifted the auto market. But, even though the minivan was easily accessible, fuel efficient and the perfect companion for a growing family, it wasn’t exactly considered a sexy vehicle. In fact, most consumers would describe the minivan as dull and drab compared to the modern-day SUV. However, it was the minivan that helped the SUV evolve, not the other way around.
The minivan has become a symbol of modern suburban living, but where did it all begin? While Volkswagen and Chrysler both claim to be the first to market, neither the VW Minibus or Chrysler’s first three minivans were actually where it all began. The DKW Schnellaster and the Citroen H-van were the early predecessors of the minivan we know today. They came to market in 1949 and 1947 respectively. The Citroen H-van was available three full years before the earliest VW Bus. But perhaps the most underrated of them all is the very first of its kind, the Chenard & Walker CHV, which was unveiled in 1946 by the French automaker.
The Beginning Since its unveiling in 1913, the Chevrolet bowtie emblem has seen numerous changes. Its shape has become synonymous with the durability and craftsmanship known to the Chevrolet community. For over a century, the emblem has been the brand marquee, but do you know where it came from? A Fuel Efficient Ride We all want our cars to get us from point A to point B. But, how you drive to your destination could determine the type of car you should get. If fuel efficiency is at the top of your priority list, you’ll want to opt for a vehicle that gets more miles per gallon depending on how you drive. Is your commute in stop-and-go city traffic, or is it mainly on the highway? Cars can get up to double the miles per gallon on the highway versus driving in city traffic according to Consumer Reports. Tested & Approved Fuel economy is one of those buzzwords connected to buying a car, but how is it actually determined for the make and model you are searching for? Vehicles are tested in the National Vehicles and Fuel Emissions Laboratory. Each vehicle is rigorously tested using a dynamometer which simulates a driving environment. A driver will run the simulation through various trip tests that would be similar to driving in city and highway traffic. For cars using carbon-based fuels like gasoline, diesel or natural gas, a hose is connected to the tailpipe to collect engine exhaust during lab testing. The collected exhaust will then be used to determine how much gas is actually being burned.
